Walking along the Molos in Limassol tonight I felt very privileged to be living here. It felt like half of the city’s inhabitants were taking their daily walk, run, cycle or skate. Members of every generation and culture that share this city were mingling and exercising – all catching a breath of the slightly cooler night air.
By Olympian beach there was the elegant La-dee-dah Open Air Cinema, courtesy of the Dashi Foundation, that was showing a collection of classic films for the past three nights – opposite the Limassol Municipality’s tasteful Summer Library @ the Blue Café. It’s a shame that both were only on for this short weekend and not for the entire season – they so suited the natural environment that they should really look in to making them more permanent fixtures!
If you missed these, don’t fret, there are more interesting fixtures to attend… There’s an abundant supply of concerts, festivals and open-air cinemas to indulge your senses and keep you entertained this summer!
In Nicosia, the Open Air Cinema Summer Movie Marathon, in association with the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Theatro Ena, is showing films weekly until well in to September. Kids under 10 go free! http://bit.ly/29Iay2p
Also in Nicosia, in the newly expanded Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation Square, Fanoromeni 16, there is a whole programme of Outdoor Cinema this summer, inclusing screenings of Wizard of Oz, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Some Like it Hot, Mamma Mia and for those of you who speak Greek – a few beautiful must-see films such as Brides and A Touch of Spice. Head to our events page for further details: http://bit.ly/2a1znGG
In Paphos, the wonderful Technopolis 20 is screening films every Tuesday night throughout July and August in their garden – with a focus on the works of Cypriot Directors. At merely 3 euros a ticket you can’t go wrong! http://bit.ly/29qeW8f
Technopolis 20 are also involved in this year’s 15th Animafest – Cyprus’ Official Animation Festival on the 21st until the 23rd July. Moving from village to village every year, Animafest shares views of the world through the art of animation. This year, it’s set across four different locations: the Lusignian Manor House garden located at the ancient town of Palaipafos, Kouklia; the Hambis Printmaking Museum, the cultural centre Technopolis 20 in Pafos and TEPAK in Limassol. http://bit.ly/29Ic6JK
Of particular interest to some of you will be the Children’s Film Program and Claymation workshop at Technoplis 20 on the 19th July @ 1830. Really worth making a visit, with the kids getting to create their own stop-motion video with plasticine: http://bit.ly/29BpeBr
As part of the European Capital of Culture – Pafos2016 – there are a number of great outdoor events going on in the Paphos area over the Summer months, including the wonderful Israeli singer Jasmin Levy. Her music has roots in Ladino (Spanish-Jewish & Flamenco) and I highly recommend seeing her live – she is simply wonderful! http://bit.ly/29NFk7p
The Cyprus Rialto World Music Festival is already in full swing – continuing throughout July. For those of you who have never been to any of their free concerts in Heroes Square, I really recommend making the trip to Limassol. World-renowned artists come every year to sing to the small crowds and for those of you who don’t manage to get a free seat by the stage, there are plenty to be had in the surrounding bars and restaurants, with just as good a view! http://bit.ly/29GElv8
One that I haven’t been to before but I’m going to make the effort to pop by for a looksee, is the Acoustic Jazz Festival, also in Limassol, on the 6th August from 16:00. Again, free entrance and cold beer – accompanied by Acoustic Jazz, Art, Photography & Crafts: http://bit.ly/29zJ68I
Another one that I haven’t had the chance to attend previously but again, looks very promising, is the Windcraft Music Fest in Katydata, Nicosia… “Bands and new collaborations from Cyprus, Greece and Canada with winds as their main ingredient will present their personal music interpretation, blending different traditions and creating new fusion sounds. The worlds of ethnic, jazz, soul, African, classical and traditional music will unite”. With day passes or a weekend ticket – free entrance and activities for kids under 12 and a free camping site, this is one for the whole family! August 12th & 13th: http://bit.ly/29Nxikj
Two hugely popular music festivals that are widely anticipated in Cyprus – the Fengaros Festival and the Afrobanana Festival are taking place this July & August.
The Fengaros Festival will take place end of July (29th – 31sy July) in Kato Drys. With more than thirty acts from Greece, Israel and England hosted over three music stages and some big names, including Joss Stone and Brooke Sharkey, it’s definitely one to visit – whether for one day or all three. Should you make a long weekend of it, there’s free camping, or plenty of quality accomodation options in the surrounding areas: http://bit.ly/2a1wcid
The Eagerly awaited Afrobanana Republic Festival will take place in the Kornos Forest on the 19th and 20th August, on the border between Nicosia and Larnaca. With four different music stages and acts from all over the world, this one is also one of the bigger Summer Festivals to attend in Cyprus: http://bit.ly/29rtAIR
Last but not least, for now, is the 17th Paradise Jazz Festival in Pomos – a cult annual affair eagerly awaited by many. With quality jazz acts from around the world, and late-night jamming sessions, this is one for the Mums and Dads. With free camping and quality accommodation options in the surrounding areas, why not make a weekend of it? http://bit.ly/29rv5qh
