MiC’s Weekly Roundup #332! February 12, 2018

NEWS: Carnival 2018!

Carnival season is well underway across the island, culminating in Limassol’s main Carnival Parade this Sunday. You can find more details about that here: http://bit.ly/LimassolCarnival2018

After all the excess of the past few weeks, we’re all looking forward to “Green (or ‘Clean’) Monday” on the 19th (note: no school that day as it is a public holiday)! Traditionally, this day marks the beginning of the 40-day fasting period in the lead-up to Easter, where everyone takes to the fields, flies kites and eats “nistisima” style (no alcohol, dairy, meat or fish, except cephalopoda – octopus, cuttlefish and squid – and shellfish).  Common foods eaten would be the unleavened lagana (λαγάνα) bread that you can find in all bakeries this time of year; olives; dips; salads, beans, pulses and grilled cuttlefish. If you fancy a detox or want to make some of your own nistisima food, you can find some nice recipes here and here.

(For all our English members, remember… it’s Pancake Day tomorrow, so make sure you’ve got your batter ready for a pancake-feast!)

New addition to our “Resources” section: an interesting organisation that we’ve recently been introduced to – Pegasus Child Recovery.
